On October 25 th 2016, Ardmore Toyota, Central City Toyota and the Enterprise Center hosted a Halloween Harvest at the Max Paul Park & Walnut Hill Community Garden. Children from all over the local area came to the Harvest for pumpkin painting, spider making, face painting and fun fall lawn games! Healthy and delicious snacks such as carrots & hummus, ginger snaps, popcorn and green smoothies were available for the kids to try and enjoy. Locals musicians also came around and shared their music with the community. A fun time was had by all! The Halloween Harvest was a great way to initiate autumn! Some estimates date the original log cabin structure to as far back as 1683, but the house continued to be expanded and improved over another 130 years. From 1803 to 1838, the Pont Reading House was the home of Joshua Humphreys, a marine architect who designed several well-known ships for the early U.S. Navy, including ships used in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. However, the area's historical significance doesn't stop at the Philadelphia city limits — surrounding towns such as Ardmore, Haverford, and Bryn Mawr are also home to historic sites dating back to the country's founding. Here are three of the best historic sites to be found in Ardmore and nearby towns. more Harriton House A visit to Bryn Mawr's Harriton House is a trip back in time. This home dates back more than 300 years, to 1704, when it was constructed by Welsh Quakers. The house's claim to fame, however, is as the home of Charles Thomson, the Secretary of the Continental Congress, which was the country's acting government during the American Revolution. Today, it is a National Register of Historic Places site, a museum, and a park. Visitors can learn about the site's history in the Education Center and explore the beautifully curated grounds that feature gardens, an apiary, an orchard, and livestock. The Harriton House also hosts a number of educational and social events throughout the year, such as the Harriton Farmstead Fair, blacksmithing classes, and a summer camp for children. Pont Reading House Ardmore's Pont Reading House is considered one of the most well-preserved examples of an early American home in the United States, and when you visit the home you'll quickly understand why. The home stands today in the same form as it did in 1813, having passed through ownership of only two families in that time. Its interior is finely crafted with curly maple woodwork, veined black marble mantles, and high ceilings. From the exterior, visitors will enjoy the ivy clinging to the home's white walls, large hemlock, ash, and swamp maple trees, and beautifully landscaped flower gardens. The appeal of the Pont Reading House goes beyond its age and architecture — this historic site was also the home of Joshua Humphreys, the "Father of the American Navy." Humphreys was a Philadelphia shipyard owner and marine architect who designed several ships for the early U.S. Navy, including ships used in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Federal School On Darby Road in Haverford stands one of the earliest schools in the area, the Federal School. Originally constructed in 1797, this one-room fieldstone building served as a Haverford Township school until 1872, after which it functioned as a residence for some time before being relegated to a storage shed until its restoration in 1976. Since 1991, the schoolhouse has served as an educational site for the Haverford Historical Society and local schools, hosting "One-Room School Experiences" where local schoolchildren can experience what school was like in the late 18th and 19th century. They're unlike anything you've ever tasted. more Go Out for a Drink Grabbing a few beers after an Eagles game is a Philadelphia tradition. If you're not ready to head home as soon as the Eagles win, get a drink at Tavern on Broad, South Philadelphia Tap Room, or McFadden's Ballpark. Each bar has game-day specials to keep prices low. They also have several televisions so you can watch the post-game show. If you love having access to a large variety of beers, then you'll want to spend a few hours at South Philadelphia Tap Room. The owners rotate taps often, and in addition, the bar offers more than 100 international beers. All three of these bars sell food, so you can get a bite to soak up any excess alcohol. Visit Center City While there are some good bars and restaurants near Lincoln Financial Field, you can find a greater concentration of them in nearby Center City. You can find retail stores, museums, and cultural activities there, too. Use the Visit Philadelphia site to find fun things to do before or after your next Eagles game. Catching a cab to Center City is an especially good idea if you don't visit the downtown area often. You're already near the neighborhood, so you might as well pop in to enjoy some of your favorite attractions. An Eagles game can get your blood pumping! But did you know that washing your car is more important during winter than any other time of the year? That's because of what we mentioned earlier — salt. Salt is bad news for the metal of cars, as it leads to rust that not only looks ugly but will also lower the value of your car. Driving on salted roads means you will get some of it sticking to your car. This is the reason keeping your car clean during winter, especially the undercarriage which picks up most of the salt, will help protect it. Use Rubber Car Mats This is one of the simplest tips to implement. All that snow and slush on your boots ends up in your car. It melts, leaving puddles of water that soak into material car mats and also seep down to the floor of the car. Again, this is a surefire way to end up with corroded floors. A rubber mat catches the water better and dries a lot faster than a material mat. Parking Inside or Outside — Which Is Best? This is debatable. You may think that parking inside is best. After all, parking in a garage keeps your car cleaner for longer, and there's no hassle of scraping off ice and snow every time you head out. On the flip side, many experts say that when all that salty snow and ice melts, it creates the ideal environment for salt to eat at your car. Parking it outside keeps the ice and snow frozen, which actually slows down the corrosion. The alternative is to buy a good-quality car cover, which means you can park it outside and help protect it from the elements. Of course, if you really want to avoid car hassles during winter, don't drive it. But as this is a car and not a bear, it's highly unlikely your car will hibernate during winter. Organizations can apply for grants if they are eligible. Because the program wants to ensure that the funds are being used for positive, nonprofit efforts, certain groups are ineligible, including lobbying groups, publications, advertising companies, capital campaigns, and endowments. Rather, the Toyota Giving Program grants funds to charitable organizations that serve the entire community regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, disability, marital status, veteran status, or political affiliation. The music festival raised money to help protect music instruction in schools and ensure that children receive all the wonderful benefits of music education. The Toyota Giving Program encouraged people to begin a dialogue on social media about the importance of music. In 2015, the program donated $1 to the VH1 Save the Music education program for every social post with the hashtag #ToyotaGiving. In 2016, the Toyota Giving Program and VH1 Save the Music donated $30,000 to a public school in need of saving its music education department. The program continues to help promote environmental consciousness and safety, education, and vehicle safety by partnering with and donating to numerous causes around the country. Some efforts include Nocturnal Wonderland in August 2015, the Life is Beautiful festival in September 2015, Stagecoach in April 2016, and the Firefly Music Festival in June 2016.
