Toyota enthusiasts got their first look at the all-new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback when it debuted at this year’s New York International Auto Show, and the reimagined compact car didn’t disappoint. While Corolla generations of the past have been marked by their dependability and practicality, the new Corolla Hatchback looks to burst onto the scene as Toyota’s most athletic small car yet.

Here’s what to expect from Toyota’s newest compact when it breaks into the marketplace later this year.

The 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback: Trims and Specs

Performance

The new Corolla Hatchback aims to improve upon the Corolla iM’s power without sacrificing fuel efficiency. Two transmission options will be made available for the new TNG 2.0L engine: a 6-speed iMT manual transmission, and a Dynamic-Shift CVT. While both offer the outstanding fuel economy you’d expect from a Corolla, the Dynamic-Shift CVT boasts a variety of performance features, including:

  • Simulated 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic steps
  • Sport Mode
  • Paddle Shifters
  • The world’s first launch gear for a passenger CV

Each of the above elements will contribute to an experience marked by enhanced handling and diminished lag.

Design

Corolla Hatchback shoppers will have the choice of two high-function trims engineered under the new TNGA platform: the XE or XSE. Either will show off a sports-coupe-inspired design highlighted by LED lights, a chrome rear diffuser, and a lower, wider stance. But the XSE trim comes with an extra set of perks, like:

  • LED fog lights
  • 18” alloy wheels
  • Chrome front grille
  • Available Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS)

And that’s just the outside. In the cabin, the Corolla Hatchback packs heated front seats, combination leather sport seating surfaces, and dual-zone climate control — making it the most driver-centric compact available.

Safety and Technology

The new Corolla Hatchback is groundbreaking in more ways than one. As the first North American car to feature standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, the Corolla Hatchback won’t just boost performance — it’ll improve your peace of mind, too.

The following technologies will come with each trim:

  • Pre-Collision System w/ Pedestrian Detection
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert w/ Steering Assist
  • Automatic High Beam
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist

The Corolla Hatchback will constantly work to protect you, but that doesn’t mean it’s all work and no play. Both the XE and XSE trims will be equipped with Entune™ 3.0 Audio. That means that an 8” touch-screen, Wi-Fi connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Amazon Alexa integration will come standard.
