reach of their groundbreaking safety  education program <em>Buckle Up for Life<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Buckle Up for Life<\/em> \u2013 or <strong><em>Abr\u00f3chate<\/em><\/strong><em>a la<\/em><strong><em>Vida<\/em><\/strong><strong> in Spanish \u2013<\/strong> is the only national program of its kind.\u00a0To view a video about the program, please click <a in  pediatric and adolescent medicine \u2013 shows that African American and  Hispanic children are more likely than other children to die in motor  vehicle crashes.\u00a0Research also shows that, due to multiple factors,  African American and Hispanic children are significantly less likely  than non-African American and non-Hispanic children to be buckled up in  seat belts or car seats.<\/div>\n<div><strong>Key Facts<\/strong><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children in the U.S. between the ages of 1 and 12.<a name=\"_ednref1\" href=\"http:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/releases\/cincinnati+childrens+toyota+expand+national+safety+program+address+significant+disparity.htm?view_id=39890#_edn1\">[i]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Three out of every 4 car seats are not used or installed correctly<a name=\"_ednref2\" href=\"http:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/releases\/cincinnati+childrens+toyota+expand+national+safety+program+address+significant+disparity.htm?view_id=39890#_edn2\">[ii]<\/a> and almost 50% of fatally injured children were unrestrained at the time of a crash.<a name=\"_ednref3\" href=\"http:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/releases\/cincinnati+childrens+toyota+expand+national+safety+program+address+significant+disparity.htm?view_id=39890#_edn3\">[iii]<\/a><\/li>\n<li> In crashes involving fatalities in  children under 14, seat belt use is lower among African Americans than  among all other race or ethnic groups.<a name=\"_ednref4\" href=\"http:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/releases\/cincinnati+childrens+toyota+expand+national+safety+program+address+significant+disparity.htm?view_id=39890#_edn4\"><sup><sup>[iv]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Hispanic children are significantly less likely to be buckled up than Non-Hispanic children across all age groups.<a name=\"_ednref5\" href=\"http:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/releases\/cincinnati+childrens+toyota+expand+national+safety+program+address+significant+disparity.htm?view_id=39890#_edn5\">[v]<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The number of children buckled up nearly tripled among the families who participated in one of <em>Buckle Up for Life<\/em>\u2019s pilot cities.<a name=\"_ednref6\" href=\"http:\/\/pressroom.toyota.com\/releases\/cincinnati+childrens+toyota+expand+national+safety+program+address+significant+disparity.htm?view_id=39890#_edn6\">[vi]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><strong>Expansion Doubles the Reach of <em>Buckle Up for Life<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div>The new locations for <em>Buckle Up for <\/em><em>Life<\/em> include  Houston, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Orange County, Calif.\u00a0They join  programs already in place with local hospital partners in Chicago,  Cincinnati, Los Angeles and San Antonio.\u00a0The program\u2019s expansion to Las  Vegas is being conducted in conjunction with Children\u2019s Hospital of  Nevada at UMC.\u00a0Hospital partners in Houston, Philadelphia and Orange  County will be announced soon.<\/div>\n<div>\u201cYears ago, a mother who was involved in a car crash in which her  child died said something to me that to this day haunts me but also  inspires me, \u2018If I only knew,\u2019\u201d said Dr. Victor Garcia, founding  director of Trauma Services at Cincinnati Children\u2019s, professor of  pediatric surgery and a co-founder of <em>Buckle Up for Life<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cThe  number of African American and Hispanic children dying unnecessarily in  motor vehicle-related crashes is alarming, something I see first hand in  my work as a trauma surgeon.\u00a0This is a public health emergency that can  be avoided and needs to be addressed.\u00a0We know that safety education and  access to car seats can make a major difference, and working with  Toyota, we are glad to have the opportunity to
